About this Book:

This book affirms the doctrine of imputed righteousness. This concept is a necessary part of the almost universal belief among Christians that our sins were reckoned to Jesus on the cross. The father of the prodigal son commanded that the best robe be brought for his son. In Christ, we are clothed with the best robe. The garment of the righteousness of Jesus covers our sin and shame. Walter Wangerin, Jr's story of "The Ragman" illustrates well this concept. This story is reprinted by permission in this work. Our hope and assurance of salvation rest squarely upon this profound biblical truth that Jesus' righteousness has been credited to us. R. C. Sproul summed it up by saying that the whole Gospel is at stake in this doctrine. The new covenant is not just another law with a cross in it. The Gospel is fundamentally different from law.

About the Author:

The author has been preaching since 1977. He has served as a missionary to the Cayman Islands (1977-1985) and preached for the Christian Chapel Church of Christ, Amory, MS (1985-1993) and the Cawson Street Church of Christ (1993-present). His ungraduate studies were at International Bible College (1977) and graduate studies at Harding Graduate School of Religion (MA, 1993). William and his wife, Norma, have two sons, Jonathan and Jeffrey.

Book Review:

Because of Jesus we can be counted righteous. This book seeks to distinguish faith righteousness and righteousness by works of human effort. There is a clear line drawn in Scripture. There are only two possible ways to seek to obtain righteoousness: from God and from among men. This book includes a discussion both of the major biblical texts dealing with this theme and a historical overview of the doctrine. The point is consistently made that it matters in whom we trust. Faith means that we trust in Another and not in ourselves. Righteousness is reckoned upon the basis of faith. Numerous analogies and illustrations from Scripture are given to make clear the truth of credited righteousness. The book consists of thirteen chapters, questions and answers, an index and bibliography of all materials referenced.
