On his deathbed, Joseph Valenti is only able to reveal fragments of his past. Before he takes his final breath he sadly watches his son uncover secret documents linking him to World War II. He dies and never sees the wide-eyed expression on his son Michael's face as he unrolls a ricepaper scroll which contains the staggering disclosure that he is half Japanese. Haunted by his father's life of duplicity and his newfound Asian heritage, Michael takes off for Japan. When his presence in Tokyo is discovered, Michael soon finds himself embroiled in a complicated scheme. He becomes checkmated at every turn without the luxury of knowing his resourceful opponent.
In the course of time, Michael befriends Kandi (Keiko) who becomes both his mentor and lover. As she patiently teaches Michael the subtle nuance of Japanese ways, Michael slowly begins to understand the complex nature of his adversaries.
It is a mysterious tale that uniquely reaches under the JAPANESE SKIN as the Asian characters skillfully practice their complex code of honor while trying to keep Michael from discovering a profound secret.
