About this Book: |

In an age when women weren’t expected to be outspoken and independent, Phoebe Wise stood apart. Men who heard of her inherited fortune tried to woo her or to rob her. But no matter how much the suitors suited and the looters looted, she refused to bow down to a society of “limpets clinging to the rock of conformity.” She celebrated her freedom with outlandish clothes and a very sharp tongue, and defended it by shotgun when necessary, even if it meant killing the man who loved her. Along the way, she also inspired the boy who was to grow up to become the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Louis Bromfield. Phoebe is Part Two of Mark Sebastian Jordan’s Mansfield Trilogy of North Central Ohio historical dramas, and the play brings the true story of this genuine American eccentric to life under the stage lights with all her feisty, inspiring spirit.
