Everyone Counts. A history of African American enslavement in Allegany County, Maryland takes a deep dive into Allegany County’s antebellum newspapers, land records and personal contemporaneous correspondence to explore the slavery we didn’t learn about in high school: slavery on the National Road. Exposing the truth behind manumissions, the Maryland Colonization movement and Maryland’s “protective” slavery laws, the author lets forgotten figures speak their truth. Amongst those figures are Wesley, enslaved by the Gordons; Elizabeth, purchased by the McKaigs; the Carters, owned by the Tomlinsons; and Matilda Gant, gifted to Mary Hoye by her father, George Calmes.
