To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the official organization of the auxiliary at Herrin Hospital, the auxiliary board decided to publish a cookbook. During that time the community of Herrin, leaders had decided to feature the Italian heritage of the community in the annual Memorial Day weekend festival. With this interest in the history of Italian immigration to Herrin, the auxiliary chose the theme of Italian recipes for their tenth-anniversary cookbook. Many of Herrin’s renowned Italian cooks were still living in that period, and there was a sense that these family recipes would be of interest to the community and the area. The foresight of those auxiliary leaders has been realized in the grand success of the cookbook. Since many of the cooks are now deceased, this cookbook is an important Herrin historical treasure. Some of the founding members of the auxiliary are also gone, but the memory of these people lives on in the fourth publication of the cookbook.

It is a tribute to the original organizers of this book that it remains in such demand. Except for this introductory page, the cookbook is unchanged as to the content prepared by the auxiliary for publication in 1992. The members of the current board hope that funds gleaned from the sale of this fourth edition will add to the monies that the auxiliary has been able to provide for improvements to Herrin Hospital. Most recently, in May of 2023, the auxiliary donated $100,000 back to the hospital to help purchase several new pieces of equipment that helped increase patient and employee safety. Since its founding in 1982, the Herrin Hospital Auxiliary has donated almost $2 Million back to the Herrin Hospital to help care for their community.
